There are a total 19 characters in Wuthering Heights. It may be much, but there are so many family trees, many characters that have similar names, and characters who have the same name. Before I begin introducing you all the characters of this wonderful book, here is a family tree for you to familiarize the families.


Heathcliff
- The main character where the story centers around
- He ultimately wants Cathy’s to want him
- He is the antihero like Edward Cullen from Twilight
- An orphan brought to lie at Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw
- Falls intensely for Mr. Earnshaw’s daughter, Cathernine
- But the fact that he is one of literature’s most voted romantic hero shows that we like men who are tortured, and obsessive
Character Traits: - Obsessive
- Loyal
- Can be violent
- There are critiques that he acts like sociopath

Catherine Earnshaw
- Daughter of Mr. Earnshaw
- Falls in love with Heathcliff so intensely that she claims to be the same person as Heathcliff
- But since she wants to advance in her social life, she marries Edgar Linton instead.
- Because of this, there are two sides to Catherine. One is with Heathcliff and the other is with Edgar.
Character Traits - Free-spirited, adventurous rebel
- Beautiful
- Spoiled
- Often arrogant
- Has a temper
- Brings misery to both men who love her, AKA the heartbreaker

Edgar Linton
- Catherine’s Husband
- Spoiled as a boy
Character Traits - Caring, Tender
- Faithful
- Boring, weak, and scared of Catherine
- Catherine describes him as “Handsome,” “Pleasant to be with,” “cheerful,” and “rich.”

Mr. Lockwood
- Our primary narrator
- But if looked closely, you can see that his judgment of could be off. In which, that causes him to be an unreliable agent of information.
- presumptuous
- He comes from England

Nelly “Ellen” Dean
- Known formally as Ellen Dean
- The chief narrator of the novel who is our eyes and ears on the ground of Wuthering Heights.
- Grew up alongside Hindley and Catherine Earnshaw
- Catherine’s servant
Character Traits - Sensible
- intelligent
- compassionate as she has strong feelings for the characters in the novel.

Hindley Earnshaw
- Catherine’s brother and Mr. Earnshaw’s son
- Hates Heathcliff
- He inherits the estate
Character Traits - Abusive
- Alcoholic

Catherine Linton AKA Young Catherine
- The only daughter of Edgar Linton and Catherine
- In a relationship with Hareton
Character Traits - Headstrong behavior
- Impetuousness
- arrogant, just like the mother
- But she’s also gentler and more compassionate than her mother

Hareton Earnshaw
- The son of Hindley and Frances Earnshaw
- Catherine’s nephew
- After Hundley’s death, Headcliff assumes custody of Hareton
- He becomes the victim of everyone else’s need for revenge
- But at the end, he has a happy ending.
Character traits - Uneducated field worker
- Illiterate
- quick-tempered
- good heart
- deep desire to improve himself

Isabella Linton
- Edgar Linton’s spoiled sister
- Envys Catherine
- falls in love with Heathcliff and marries him
- Her life gets ruined by not being loved by Heathcliff and is treated as a tool on his quest to revenge

Mr. Earnshaw
- Catherine and Hindley’s father
- He adopts Heathcliff
- Prefers Heathcliff rather than Hindley

Mr. Linton
- Edgar and Issabella’s father
- An established member of the gentry

Mrs. Linton
- Mr. Linton’s wife
- Snobbish
- Does not like Heathcliff to be near her children, Edgar and Isabella
- Teaches Catherine to act like a gentle woman

Frances Earnshaw
- Hindley’s wife
- Silly
- Treats Heathcliff cruelly
- Her background is a mystery
- Dies shortly after giving birth to Hareton

Linton Heathcliff
- Heathcliff’s son by Isabella
- Raised in London by his mother and does not meet his father until he is thirteen years old after she dies

Zilla
- The housekeeper at Wuthering Heights
- Serves to fill in some information for Nelly
- Stands in contrast to Ellen

Joseph
- Servant at Wuthering Heights
- Speaks with a thick Yorkshire accent
Character Traits - Long wicked
- Super religious
- Strange
- stubborn
- unkind
- Nobody really likes him

Dr. Kenneth
- The local doctor
- Sympathetic and Intelligent man

Juno
- Heathcliff’s Dog

Micheal
- The Lintons stable boy

Mr. Green
- A lawyer in Gimmerton who’s involved with Edgar Linton’s Estate
