Love & Misadventure: The Collection of Poems Was OK, Book Review

My Review (with Spoilers)

Ok let’s talk about the poems that were boring.

This poem seems a little basic, and boring for me. It sounds like something you read in a cheesy romance novel. What this poem, and what many others lack, is emotion. I wanna read the emotion and the past that these soulmates endure to be together. And if they’re isn’t any, then I give up on love.

This is one of the poems that really confused me. Maybe the poem is meant to be broad, but I need concrete ideas and examples that explain to me why they call themselves time travelers.

Another confusing poem. This poem had a good and interesting first two stanzas, and then I lost the collection with the last stanza.

I just wish her book had more substance for me to have a personal connection to it. Maybe I don’t enjoy this book because I’m not a female, but it’s just not that good.

What could of made the book better:

I would loved to see longer poems, poems that provided more detail into the experiences that Lang writes about.

Postive Criticism:

i enjoyed every poem from this book. actually, this is a great example and a reminder for me of what my life is composed of, of random miracles in a form of sentences or people that i have encountered on my way quite accidentally. without a thought or a bigger plan.

Negative Criticism:

It’s not all bad. It’s just so simple. I wasn’t wowed by clever turn of words or phrases. There are some I like (most of which have turned up in one form or another on Tumblr), but ultimately it didn’t resonate with me. Maybe I’ll go floss later. That’s about all the impact it had.

Will I read more books by this author?

I’ll probably read a more recent publication just to see how Lang is doing, but for now I don’t think so.

  1. Thank you for sharing the review. I really want to get into reading more poetry but I just don’t know where to start and I kind of struggle to tell whether poems are actually good or not? Maybe it’s because I study poetry in English and I’m constantly told how amazing some poem about a farm is that I just find boring, I don’t know…

    1. I am the same way! In undergrad I studied a lot of poetry and when I read this, this was nothing as good as anything I’ve read before. I really wanna read more contemporary poetry just to see what most writers are writing nowadays so stay tuned on my blog for that.

But on the discussion of what makes a good poem or not, I feel like if a poem makes a strong impact to you, then that’s a good poem. If it doesn’t, then it’s a bad poem. We all have different standards of what is good and what is bad poetry. I guess you just have to judge that for yourself.
